Siloam

About Us

Founders Kurt Weigle and Kara Showerman grew up in Detroit, in a neighborhood where life was organized around family and our church and school, St. Christopher.  Our parents really did borrow a cup of sugar from our neighbor in the middle of baking, our parish priests and nuns would eat dinner with us at the local pizzeria, and we never had any doubt that our parents loved us more than anything in the world. We were blessed in ways that some others are not and continue to be to this day.

Siloam is borne largely of the sense of gratitude that comes from this idyllic hand dealt to us in life.  Even when our family struggled financially, the strength of faith and family life made us feel rich.  Little Grandma’s pancakes and Velveeta cheese for dinner was pure joy to us.

Today we feel rich because of the Christian faith nurtured in us by our parents, teachers, and spiritual leaders.  As we have done our best to feed our faith through worship, prayer life, and service, it provides us ever greater joy and peace. We want to share the Good News with the world.  Heaven and hell start on earth; we want everyone to experience the glimpse of heaven that proceeds from faith.

Kurt is a practicing Catholic in love with the sacraments, particularly the Blessed Sacrament.  His recent years have been devoted to more fully understanding and sharing with others the rich intellectual tradition of the Church.  Bishop Robert Barron, one of the Church’s foremost intellects today, has inspired Kurt to delve into the brilliance of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Theresa de Lisieux, St. Catherine of Siena, Dante Aligheri, G.K. Chesterton, and other giants and into others who have shaped our world today, many of them decidedly not Christian, including Aristotle, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Sartre. He hopes that some of the wisdom of the great Christian thinkers is evident in Siloam’s work.

Kurt is blessed in his marriage to Jennifer and the four children who they lovingly coax toward beauty, goodness and truth.

Kara enjoys a focus on ministry and strives to live out her faith through action. She’s worked with various service organizations and helped found a non-profit in 2015 that works with underserved populations of students in grades K-12, providing basic needs like weekend food bags, athletic shoes, and winter apparel.

Kara and her husband Scott attend a Bible teaching non-denominational church in Frankenmuth, MI. Both have a passion for reaching people for Christ and enjoy a “conversational” approach to ministry with friends and people they meet.  They recently purchased a small farm and are excited for a new adventure they’ll share with their children and grandchildren, who also have homes on the property.

People sometimes ask, “Is this a Catholic website?  Protestant? Christian?”  The answer is “Yes.”  When we came together to found Siloam, we recognized that we worship differently, each filled with conviction about his and her respective paths, but we share a commitment to share the joy of the Gospel.  Christians of all sorts have much more in common with one another than we have that differentiates us.  Siloam includes content from a variety of traditions, knowing that there are many paths to Christ.  The key is to follow one of them and to move ever closer to the way, the truth, and the life (Jn, 14:6).
